Who’s down?

“Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery. None but ourselves can free our minds.” ― Bob Marley

An independent thought is rare, a perpetual independent state of mind, rarer still. In a day and age where we have an influx of information from so many different forums and mediums, newspapers, televisions, social media websites, everything that we take in and may be influenced by is mostly reiterated and repeated conventional knowledge. It is a shame, to be honest.

An unadventurous, straight path following state of mind moves us forward at a gradual pace at best. At worst, instead of being a progressive force, it pushes us backwards. Creative, independent thinking is what essential for us to achieve any significant jump in productivity.

When we talk about an independent state of mind we don’t mean forming an opinion without any sort of input from our surroundings, No. Independent thinking is apparent in the way we accept and seek relevant information from our surrounding and apply it in a way that set us apart from all else. Having an independent state of thought and mind means making sense of the world we live in based on our own experiences and observations instead of merely relying on the word of others.

From a logical point of view, if we think the way everyone else thinks, we should only expect to achieve what they are already achieving, no higher no better. Having a state of mind that you can call independent is where you avoid banal influences, think and do what every other individual deems impossible and break free from conventional wisdom.

Let’s see if you can escape from the bindings of societies norms, challenge yourself, try the following strategies

  1. Disconnect – No, not cut yourself from the world and all its happenings, but disconnect from that conventional, consensual opinion. Reduce the media and level of devotion you give to it.
  2. Disbelieve – an independent thinker does not necessarily contradict everything but they don’t generally give in to a status quo opinion by default. Without becoming cynical, develop the habit of not instinctively relying on conventionally available information and knowledge. Distrust self-evident truths until you have sufficiently confirmed logic behind said information.
  3. Be Random, Gain Perspective – take a chance, a leap of faith if you will. Leave behind the everyday mundane. Stand still to give yourself the opportunity to reflect, and if need be, ridicule your own beliefs and then explore new angles and experiences for a different perspective.

You don’t have to have an exceptionally high IQ, or an Ivy League education to think outside the box and have an independent, untainted mindset. Consider little children, our conventionalism deems wearing clothes and eating fruit, however their independent thinking and utter disregard for outside opinion allows them to try to eat clothes and wear fruit. Don’t let views and opinions of those that surround you influence and limit your possibilities. Think. Have an independent state of mind. You could be wrong, but you could also be shockingly right.
